Out With the Old, In With the Older!

by Richard McArthur on July 19, 2010

It was a day that I would never imagine happening, but it has! After thirteen years of ownership I have decided to sell the Europa. I had been going through a period of getting nowhere with the restoration of the car even though it was in the final stages of completion. Then as fate would have it, a car that I had been following on and off over the years had come up for sale. Maybe I was caught at a weak moment or maybe it was because I worked out that I could (with the sale of the Europa) actually afford this car.

The car in question is a one off special call the Lotus 7Y (more on its history later).

Now the plan was always to race the Europa when it was finished, but with prices for things such as gearboxes and engine parts starting to get expensive and the fact that the Europas body work was in immaculate condition, being on track was always going to be a worry and could of proved to be expensive in the event of an off or accident! The 7Y was only built as a competition car so its home is on the track which for some reason in my mind makes things easier to live with!

The Europa sold within a few days and was trailered away by its new owner leaving me to collect my new car from Paul Matty Sports cars in Bromsgrove.

This is as far as I have got with it so far, not helped by the numerous problems with the Scimitar, but more on that subject later!

The Bluebird Supporters Club Dinner

by Richard McArthur on July 4, 2010

The Bluebird Supporters ClubI was very lucky to be invited to The Bluebird Supporters Club dinner at the Bluebird Club in Chelsea on 12 June, with guest speaker Wing Commander Andy Green OBE, holder of the World Land Speed Record. It promised to be a great evening.

The Bluebird Club was once a garage, having opened in 1923 with connections to Malcolm Campbell who held the franchise for Itala and Ballot cars. The garage closed in 1927 and was used in later years as an ambulance station before being turned into a restaurant in 1997.

The evening started with drinks and a chance to chat to Donald Stevens who worked on Donald Campbell’s Bluebird CN7 land speed record car in the 1960s. After the meal, Andy Green spoke about the early days of record breaking up to and about the next project, which is the Bloodhound Project. This is a 1000mph car that will hopefully keep the record forever British and out of the reach of our international rivals!

After the speech I had the chance to ask Andy Green a question, which was ‘how do you stop a 1000mph car?’ His answer was mainly the use of airbrakes and two parachutes to hopefully bring the car to a safe stop.

At the moment there aren’t any confirmed dates for the land speed record attempt, but I’ll keep you posted when I find out!

Rooting Around at Beaulieu Autojumble

May 17, 2010

An enjoyable day was spent at the spring autojumble at Beaulieu this weekend. Whilst I was unable to cross much off from my wish list of parts wanted, it was still nice to see what was on offer. A couple of restorable Super Twos were up for sale (see image below) and as ever a [...]

Another Money Pit is Purchased

March 29, 2010

After selling my beloved Reliant Scimitar SE5a a few years back and instantly regretting it, I decided it was time to get another. Trying to find a nice one though was proving more difficult than I thought. After trawling the classifieds for what seemed like an age I finally managed to find one that sounded [...]

More 1970s Ads

March 8, 2010

Here’s another great selection of adverts from the 70s. The Dunlop ads are a particular favourite and are reminiscent of the James Bond film posters of the same era. Enjoy.
